City Mall, Jordan’s largest retail complex, was constructed in 2005. During design, the engineering consultants specified traditional softeners and chemical dosing to protect the hot water, air conditioning, and cold water systems from scale. This approach required additional pipework, chemical storage space, and daily maintenance.
The challenge
Prevent scale build-up across domestic hot water, cold water, and HVAC systems
Softeners and chemical dosing systems added significant capital cost, space requirements, and running costs
Daily maintenance and chemical handling raised health and safety concerns
Backwashing softeners would waste water and energy
The solution
Fluid Dynamics proposed catalytic Colloid-a-tron (CAT) units as a non-chemical alternative. The design eliminated the need for softeners and dosing systems, saving space, installation cost, and ongoing maintenance.
Installation
1 × unit replacing the softener system
2 × units on the hot water supply
2 × units on each calorifier
1 × unit on the cold water supply serving taps and urinals
1 × unit on the air conditioning circuit
