ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation) is India’s largest oil and gas exploration and production company. On its offshore rigs, seawater is used to cool compressors, but high hardness levels quickly cause fouling and scale build-up.
The challenge
Compressors needed frequent cleaning due to heavy scale deposits from seawater cooling
One unit required cleaning every 65 operating hours, another every 172 hours
Cleaning involved shipping chemicals offshore, using large amounts of manpower, and taking compressors offline
This meant higher costs, logistical challenges, and reduced availability of critical equipment
The solution
Magcat conditioners were installed on the cooling water inlets of two compressors. Cleaning frequency and run time were monitored before and after installation.
Results
Compressor 1: mean time between cleans extended from 65 hours to 163.5 hours
Compressor 2: mean time between cleans extended from 172 hours to 367 hours
Significant savings in manpower hours and reduced downtime
